ROGOLONE

"Il Rogolone" 479 m is an enormous oak tree which stands in the middle of a clearing in the woods in the area of Grandola ed Uniti. People say that in the old days the ruling men used to gather under the tree whenever important decisions had to be taken. It is an easy walk through the country with lovely views of the Menaggio valley. Who wants can continue the walk to the beautiful roman church San Giorgio near the town Gottro 547 m and from there to Naggio (657 m), a picturesque village. From Naggio an old muletrack leads back down to Codogna.

- starting point: Menaggio 200 m or by car as far as Codogna (ideal for children)
-time: from Menaggio to Rogolone: 2.15 hrs (from Codogna to il Rogolone: 0.45 min).
- from Rogolone to Naggio and back to Menaggio 3.00 hrs.
- ascent: 279m as far as Rogolone/ 457m as far as Naggio

Route
Follow the description of the walk to "Sass Corbee" up to the point where you get down to the river. Cross the bridge and follow the mule track as it leads up to Codogna. You reach the road close to the war memorial; cross it and pick up the track below the walls of the left side of Villa Camozzi (sign Rogolone on top of the wall). >From the even track you have a beautiful view of the Val Menaggio. The trail then leads into the woods and after crossing several streams and a gate it leads steeply uphill to "il Rogolone". If you want to continue, pick up the trail down on the left side of the clearing. After having passed a gate the trail leads through the woods until it reaches a wide mule track, which you follow to the left. After a short steep stretch you get to the church San Giorgio with its 13th century frescos. From here you pass a bridge and follow the untarred road leading uphill with a beautiful of Lake Piano and Lake Lugano, to the village Gottro (547m). It leads on to a tarred road, which you follow to the right to Naggio (657m) 1.30 hrs from "Rogolone". (Inn (crotto) at the beginning of the village) At the church, before turning to the right, we highly recommend to visit the old center of the village and mind not to skip "Piazza Maggiore". Back at the church follow the road as far as the first bend. Here you go straight on and near another church close to the cemetery you pick up "l'antica strada per Codogna" to the left. Over the old mule-track and a bit over the road you arrive at Codogna in 30 min.. From here you follow the same way as you came, back to Menaggio
